The Grindstone Running Festival by UTMB takes place in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, on the trails of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest. The terrain is classic Appalachian: wooded ridgelines, rocky footing and repeated climbs, with no extreme altitude but very little let-up between ascents.
4 km with 6,400 m of vertical gain, 100 km with 3,350 m, 50 km with 1,550 m and 21 km with 500 m. The 100-mile race is regarded as one of the toughest on the East Coast.
