The Montane Winter Spine follows the Pennine Way, the national trail running up the spine of northern England to the Cheviots on the Scottish border. It is held in the depths of the British winter: waterlogged peat, exposed moorland, very long hours of darkness and constant navigation on ground that carries no race markings.
Five formats share the event, with staggered starts. Sprint South and Challenger South set off on 9 January, the full Spine and Challenger North on 10 January, and Sprint North on 12 January. The Spine itself covers 431km over the whole Pennine Way and takes roughly a week. Across the formats, distances range from 46 to 268 miles.
