The Mount Marathon Race is held in Seward, a small port town on Alaska's southern coast at the head of Resurrection Bay. The route leaves the town streets and goes straight up the flank of Mount Marathon on a mix of steep trail, roots, rock, loose scree and, depending on the year, lingering snow. The descent follows the fall line, with runners scree-skiing and sliding much of the way down.
The organization describes it as the toughest 5K on the planet: a short format that is vertical from start to finish and a major local event.
